BUET Student Makes History as First Bangladeshi ‘Global Winner 2022’ in Prestigious Undergraduate Awards for Innovative Landfill Project
Zareen Tasneem Sharif, a standout student at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), has achieved a groundbreaking feat by clinching the prestigious ‘Global Winner 2022’ title in the field of Architecture and Design at the Global Undergraduate Awards. Her winning project, titled ‘Waste in the City: Agglomerating Local Economy of Matuail Landfill,’ reimagines an active landfill as an energy-efficient industrial ecology. The project not only integrates the cultural fabric and lives of the people of Dhaka but also revives the lost agricultural traditions of Matuail.
Sharif’s remarkable achievement marks the first time a Bangladeshi student has been honored with the “Junior Nobel Prize” of the academic world. The Global Undergraduate Awards, renowned as one of the most esteemed academic accolades globally, received submissions from 73 countries across 25 disciplines. Entries are submitted anonymously through an online platform and rigorously evaluated by a panel of professional academics.
Under the patronage of Ireland’s President, Micheal D. Higgins, the awards recognize participants at three levels: Highly Commended Entrants, Regional Winners, and Global Winners. While previous years have seen Bangladeshi students receive awards in the first two categories, Zareen’s groundbreaking work now stands as the first in the nation’s history to be named among the 25 Global Winners. Her accomplishment comes in the face of fierce competition, with 2812 submissions from around the globe.
